Random Doug-isms

Every once in a while I'll be sitting quietly and without provocation I will get a message out of the ether from my friend Doug. Usually nothing more than a random strand of thought that Doug feels the need to share, yet interestingly unconnected to any past conversation or timely relevance. I stopped questioning this a long time ago. I enjoy them, for the most part. Mostly they're pleasant enough. I liked this one, as since I was quite young (and then later refueled by "Magnum P.I.") I have wanted to fly a helicopter. And, like millions of other kids of my generation, had a Fisher Price orange and yellow helicopter. Unlike a lot of Fisher Price accessories, that helicopter outlasted the Airport, Barn, Garage, School Bus, and most of the other play sets that had been lovingly stored by out mother for our future children to play with. After our parents divorced, those same Fisher Price sets were the victims of a particularly boring summer's day and some gasoline. They, and many straight-bodied spherical-headed, armless inhabitants (including several of the black eternally happy 'dogs' that from a very early age bothered the hell out of me) in the spirit of imaginative play, were all destroyed in a cataclysmic earthquake / fire / end-of- World scenario that also saw the demise-by-fire of superhero wannabe Nerfman, a Nerf glider, and a basketball with a hole in it. By the way, you can fill a basketball half-full of gasoline, set it on fire, and kick it around the yard leaving trails of burning grass (or in the case of the driveway, gravel) and it won't explode. Or at least it didn't that day. What was really fun was to kick it HIGH in the air and just watch it leave a burning fire trail in the air then hit the earth and splash burning gasoline in a cloud all around it. Ahh, memories. Kids these days just don't know how to have fun. Doug wasn't there for that one, but I'm sure he would have enjoyed it. OH, and don't kick a burning Nerfman with your bare foot. The Nerf material will stick to you like napalm and just keep right on melting into your skin. That one I learned the hard way :)

Well, here's Doug's random strand for today. Enjoy!

3:09 PM Doug: if i could choose any one aircraft to learn to fly (and OWN), it would be a helicopter. if i had to go fixed-wing, it'd be something like a Sherpa - overbuilt, slow, and capable of really short takeoffs and landings. if i could have just one boat, it'd be a sailboat with motor backup. i guess i need to get to the upper middle class to realize any of my real dreams. if i could have just one wheeled vehicle, it'd be a motorcycle. THAT is within my grasp...but all the above assume i shall die single, and be content that way. wonder what the future holds in store?
3:13 PM when i was a kid, i dreamed of helicopters. as a toddler i had an ugly little yellow playskool helicopter with orange rotor and tail rotor. played with it endlessly. as i grew up...every helicopter in my dreams (and there were LOTS of them) was yellow with orange rotors. if i owned one now it wouldn't be those awful colors...i think. but i still have the helicopter dreams, and still the daydreams they spurred.

He waxes well doesn't he? I keep telling him to blog, but he won't. Hell, I don't even do it, so I can't get too far up his ass for wasting his talents. But I think he'd be better at it. He's actually got (using his word) "oodles" of anime knowledge. He could be a real Internet anime guru, but he chooses to spend his time with imaginary IRC people. Ah well, his loss.

Myself, I have all sorts of useless knowledge, but nothing that I think anyone would really have to listen to me to obtain. The only think I have that other people don't are my opinions, but of course everyone has their own, just like assholes. Ah well.

More from My Buddy Doug

I've skipped several of his anime dissertations. Probably because I'd forgotten about how easy it was to log in w/ Google now. Anyway, here's his take on another anime, or at least a preamble. When he's done I'm sure there will be an addendum.
Hyperbole aside he does turn a descriptive phrase delightfully.
Note his hetero use of the word 'oodles.'

" Every once in a long while, when panning for gold, one finds a really shiny nugget among the sand. 'Planetes', that's a shiny nugget among the formulaic sand of the anime riverbed. I have watched 11 of 26 eps thus far, and after a rocky start where there was just oodles of formulaic sand, there's this bright shiny nugget that really impresses the heck out of me. it's about some space debris catchers, orbital garbagemen, whose job is to eliminate as much stray flotsam as they can to try to make orbital space around the Earth a little safer for human transit. it takes place in 2075, and you can clearly imagine the horror of being struck by the blizzard of debris circling earth at 18,000 miles an hour...but i sort of digress. it's probably (next to ghost in the shell) the best combination of 2D and CGI animation i've yet seen, put together with serious intent and very good scriptwriting and direction. there are the obligatory 'over-the-top' moments that are somewhat annoying to this american mindset - but wow there were four really impressively made eps in a row - and as you know, it's sort of hard to do that without just following a story arc. each could stand alone and still be extremely impressive. plus, it's genuine hd quality - 1280x720 resolution and absolutely gorgeous to a sci-fi fan."

See? You just know there's more coming. I for one can't wait.
